ESOL Students Explore Careers During Yorkshire Water Visit
June 9, 2026Local students gain insight into water industry operations and job opportunities
A group of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students recently took part in a work experience visit to Yorkshire Water. The visit aimed to provide practical knowledge about the water cycle, water treatment processes, and potential career pathways within the water industry.
Understanding Water Treatment and Conservation
During the visit, students toured a Yorkshire Water facility where they observed how water is cleaned and supplied to homes and businesses. Many students expressed surprise at the scale and complexity of the operation. One student, Muhammad Haider, commented on the experience, noting the unexpected nature of the water cleaning process.
The visit also focused on educating students about water safety and conservation. Learning about the treatment process helped some students feel more confident about drinking tap water. Muhammad Haider stated that after the visit, he was reassured that tap water is thoroughly cleaned and safe to drink.
Students were also informed about responsible water use, including what should and should not be disposed of down drains, supporting environmental awareness and sustainable living.
Exposure to Diverse Career Opportunities
The visit introduced students to a variety of roles within Yorkshire Water. They had the opportunity to speak directly with staff members about careers in engineering, operations, customer service, and environmental management. The visit also highlighted modern workplace practices, including flexible working arrangements.
ESOL student Esmail Muzu noted that some roles allow employees to work from home, which was a new concept for many students. The visit also emphasised apprenticeships and alternative routes into employment, providing options beyond university education.
Tutor Ibtehal Tashani explained that the experience helped students consider career paths they had not previously thought about, with some expressing interest in apprenticeships as a route into work.
Developing Skills and Confidence
The work experience complemented the students’ ESOL studies by encouraging communication and interaction with professionals. Students engaged confidently in discussions and completed a quiz to reinforce their learning.
In addition to language development, the visit supported life skills such as teamwork, confidence building, and workplace readiness, which are important for future employment prospects.
Impact of the Visit
Overall, the visit to Yorkshire Water provided a valuable learning experience for the ESOL students. It broadened their understanding of the water industry and inspired them to explore a wider range of career possibilities.
