Tribute artwork raises funds for local medical research

A new limited-edition painting by Bradford artist Bob Barker is helping to raise funds for the Plastic Surgery and Burns Research Unit (PSBRU) at the University of Bradford. The artwork, titled Take Me Home, depicts supporters walking to Bradford City AFC’s stadium on matchday and commemorates the 40th anniversary of the 1985 Valley Parade fire tragedy.

Background of the Valley Parade fire

On 11 May 1985, a fire broke out at Valley Parade stadium during a match between Bradford City AFC and Lincoln City. The disaster resulted in the deaths of 56 people, including 54 Bradford City fans and two Lincoln City supporters, and injured 258 others. Bob Barker’s two sons, Richard and Stevie, were among the crowd that day but escaped unharmed.

Mr Barker has expressed his ongoing connection to the event, stating that he will never forget how fortunate his sons were compared to others affected by the tragedy. He supports the PSBRU in recognition of the care provided to victims of the fire and the unit’s continuing work.
