Seasonal message highlights visitor growth and upcoming events

As the Christmas season approaches, Bradford Cathedral has shared an update reflecting on the past year and outlining plans for December. The cathedral has experienced a notable increase in visitors throughout 2025, coinciding with Bradford’s designation as UK City of Culture.

Visitor numbers rise during City of Culture year

Bradford Cathedral reports that visitor numbers have more than doubled compared to previous years. Visitors have come from across the UK and internationally, with representatives from 36 countries recorded. The cathedral hopes that those who have visited will speak positively about both the cathedral and the city, continuing its long-standing role as a place of peace and worship for over 1,400 years.

Financial support remains important

The cathedral emphasises the ongoing need for financial support to maintain its activities and outreach. Alongside prayer and service, fundraising efforts are essential to sustain its mission. The head of fundraising has provided a message encouraging support, which can be accessed via the cathedral’s website.

Christmas events and services planned

The cathedral’s December schedule includes a number of traditional concerts and services. Highlights include:

  • A concert featuring the Black Dyke Band
  • The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

These events aim to offer familiar and comforting experiences during the festive season.

New service to acknowledge different experiences of Christmas

Recognising that the holiday season can be difficult for some, the cathedral will hold a ‘Blue Christmas’ service. This reflective service is intended to provide space for those who may find the season challenging or exhausting, offering an opportunity for quiet reflection.

Leadership changes ahead

Looking ahead to 2026, the cathedral will see the departure of Dean Andy and Ali, who will be relocating to Melbourne, Australia. Their move is described as a response to a calling to continue their work in a new context. The cathedral community expresses both sadness at their departure and support for their future endeavours.

Visitors are invited to attend services, concerts, or spend time in reflection at Bradford Cathedral during Advent.
