Classic silent film Sherlock Jr to be shown with live alt-rock music

On 5 February 2026, Pictureville Cinema at the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford will host a special screening of Buster Keaton’s 1924 silent film Sherlock Jr, accompanied by music from the American alternative rock band R.E.M. The event is part of the Silents Synced series, which pairs classic silent movies with contemporary rock music.

About the film and music pairing

Sherlock Jr is a comedy that follows a film projectionist, played by Buster Keaton, who dreams of becoming a detective. The plot involves his character being framed for theft and using his wits to clear his name. The film is noted for its innovative stunts and visual effects, including some that reportedly led to Keaton injuring himself during filming.

For this screening, the film will be reimagined with a soundtrack featuring tracks from R.E.M.’s albums Monster (1994) and New Adventures in Hi-Fi (1996). This combination aims to offer audiences a unique cinematic and musical experience, blending silent film with alt-rock soundscapes.
