Former Leeds Bradford Airport CEO Reflects on Career and Service

Ed Anderson has been awarded an honorary Doctor of the University degree by the University of Bradford in recognition of his extensive career and contributions to the region. The award marks a significant milestone in a relationship that spans over 50 years.

Career and Local Connections

Mr Anderson’s first job was as a trainee accountant with Bradford Council, beginning his professional journey in the area more than five decades ago. He later pursued studies in economics and qualified as an accountant. Since arriving in West Yorkshire as a student in 1969, he has remained a long-term resident of the region.

His career includes leadership roles in both local government and the aviation sector. He served on the management team at Leeds City Council before becoming Chief Executive Officer of Leeds Bradford Airport, a position he held for ten years until 2007. During his tenure, he played a key role in attracting the airline Jet2 to establish its first base at the airport.

Public Service and Leadership Roles

In addition to his executive roles, Mr Anderson has held several non-executive positions, including Chair of the Yorkshire Building Society during the global financial crisis, Chair of National Savings & Investments, Chair of Mid Yorkshire NHS Hospitals Trust, and Chair of Leeds Trinity University. He also served on the Council of the University of Leeds for 15 years, including a period as Deputy Chair.

Since 2018, he has served as Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, acting as The King’s representative in the county. He is expected to retire from this role later this year.

Honours and Personal Life

  • Knight of St Gregory (papal knighthood)
  • Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to the financial sector and public life in Yorkshire

Mr Anderson is married with four adult children and one grandchild. His personal interests include music and sport, and he is known for being a lifelong fan of Bruce Springsteen, having attended 17 concerts.

Reflections and Advice

Reflecting on his career, Mr Anderson highlighted his time as Chair of the Yorkshire Building Society during the financial crisis as particularly challenging. He noted the board’s swift action to de-risk the business and complete four merger transactions, which helped the organisation emerge stronger.

Regarding advice for current graduates, he suggested embracing opportunities outside one’s comfort zone, emphasising the potential for personal achievement through such experiences.
