Graduates Establish Women in STEM Network at Bradford
December 5, 2025New support group aims to promote STEM subjects among women
Two recent graduates from the University of Bradford have left a lasting impact by founding a support network for women studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The group, known as the STEMinism Society, was created to encourage female participation in STEM fields and to foster an inclusive community.
Origins and development of the STEMinism Society
The society was established in 2023 by Alex Troup and Maleeha Abbass, both of whom completed their Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) degrees in Chemical Engineering in December 2025. The initiative began as a group chat among the founders and a friend, which later evolved into a formal society aimed at supporting women in STEM disciplines.
Since its inception, the STEMinism Society has organised a variety of events on campus, including:
- An alumni networking event in March 2024
- A speed networking event in February 2025
- Social activities such as girls’ nights out and trips, including a visit to Manchester attended by over 30 STEM students
Impact and future of the society
Alex Troup, now working as a process engineer, described the university experience as more than just academic achievement, highlighting the creation of a supportive community through the society. Maleeha Abbass, who is pursuing a Master’s degree in Advanced Chemical Engineering, expressed pride in the society’s progress and the support it has provided to its members.
The STEMinism Society continues to operate at the University of Bradford, with current Secretary and Ally Ambassador Marnie Comrie taking on leadership responsibilities. Comrie has noted that the founders have established a “long-lasting legacy of an inclusive space in STEM.”
Commitment to equality and inclusion
The society aligns with the University of Bradford’s broader commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion. By addressing barriers faced by women in STEM and creating a supportive environment, the group contributes to the university’s goal of fostering an inclusive space where all students can succeed and contribute positively.
Additionally, the society has engaged in charitable activities, including fundraising for causes such as Victims of Conflict.
