Bradford Joins International Canal-City University Network
December 17, 2025New global alliance aims to advance research and sustainability
The University of Bradford has become a founding member of a new international network connecting universities located in canal cities around the world. The Canal-City Universities Cooperation Mechanism (CUCM) was launched recently in Yangzhou, China, bringing together 23 universities from 10 countries with the goal of fostering collaboration on research, education, and sustainable urban development.
Focus on innovation and cultural exchange
CUCM is designed to promote cooperation across several areas, including joint research projects, academic exchanges, and the development of joint degree programmes. The initiative also emphasises cultural exchange and youth engagement through seminars and collaborative activities.
The five-year plan for CUCM includes:
- Research partnerships addressing urban development and ecological protection
- Joint degree programmes between member universities
- Cultural exchange initiatives to enhance understanding among participating regions
- Technological innovation, including artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twin technologies
Bradford’s role in the alliance
Bradford is expected to contribute expertise in AI, digital twins, advanced materials, and ethical AI regulation. Professor Savas Konur, Head of Computing and Engineering at Bradford, highlighted the university’s commitment to creating new partnerships that offer opportunities for both academics and students.
Global significance of canal cities
Canals have historically served as vital corridors for trade, culture, and international cooperation. According to the CUCM symposium, there are over 520 canals across more than 50 countries, connecting around 3,000 cities worldwide.
The network aims to inject new vitality into these historic canal regions by addressing contemporary challenges such as sustainable urban development and environmental protection.
Support from international partners
Leaders from member institutions and organisations emphasised the importance of CUCM in fostering high-quality cooperation in higher education and enhancing dialogue among different civilisations. Xi Yanchun, Vice President of Xinhua News Agency, noted that Xinhua will support the mechanism through journalism and research insights.
The establishment of CUCM represents a significant step towards strengthening international research collaboration and leveraging university expertise to contribute to the prosperity and sustainable development of canal cities globally.
