Professor Gillian Murray Named New Vice-Chancellor

Professor Gillian Murray has been appointed as the next Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bradford. She is set to begin her role in July 2026, succeeding Interim Vice-Chancellor Professor Nick Braisby.
Professional background
Professor Murray joins Bradford from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, where she has spent nine years as Deputy Principal (Enterprise and Business). During her tenure, Heriot-Watt became a national leader in Graduate Apprenticeships and developed a virtual campus supporting approximately 7,000 learners globally.
Her leadership contributed to a significant increase in research and knowledge exchange income at Heriot-Watt. She played a key role in advancing research partnerships and fostering enterprise initiatives that aimed to translate research into practical applications.
Previous roles and regional projects
Before her time at Heriot-Watt, Professor Murray was involved in regional economic development projects in Scotland and Merseyside. She was also co-founder and director of the Virtual Engineering Centre at the University of Liverpool.
Transition and university outlook
- Professor Murray will take over from Professor Nick Braisby, who has served as Interim Vice-Chancellor since January 2026.
- Professor Braisby stepped in following the retirement of former Vice-Chancellor Professor Shirley Congdon in December 2025.
