Alternative Provision pupils engage with immersive VR technology

Students aged 14 to 16 attending Bradford College’s Alternative Provision programme recently took part in a virtual reality (VR) session aimed at enhancing their engagement and digital skills. The event, held at the College’s Alternative Provision Centre, provided pupils with hands-on experience using VR headsets and interactive simulations.

VR session details and objectives

The session introduced learners to a variety of virtual environments, including simulated engineering workshops and wellbeing spaces. One key element was a VR Identity & Gangs Awareness module, which presented realistic scenarios to encourage reflection on issues such as gang involvement, peer pressure, and decision-making.

Hassnat Yasir, Pastoral and Intervention Officer, explained that the immersive experience was designed to help Year 10 and 11 students consider their personal values and the potential consequences of their choices.

Activities and student engagement

  • Exploration of 360-degree virtual scenarios
  • Problem-solving tasks within digital environments
  • Use of digital creativity tools
  • Introduction to VR technology for many students

The session aimed to build confidence and broaden students’ understanding of future educational and career pathways by exposing them to emerging technology.

Future plans for VR at Bradford College

Bradford College intends to continue incorporating VR activities into its curriculum, recognising the growing importance of digital skills across various sectors. The college is investigating how virtual reality can support subjects such as construction, art and design, digital media, and health and social care.

This initiative reflects the college’s commitment to providing learners with access to innovative learning tools and preparing them for the evolving demands of the workplace.
