Exploring the artistic heritage of Bradford and surrounding areas

The Bingley Gallery is set to open a new exhibition titled Past Masters of the Aire and Wharfe Valleys, running from 5 February to 15 March 2026. The exhibition will be open from 10:00 to 17:00, Thursday to Sunday, and entry is free to the public.

The collection on display has been carefully assembled over many years by David Starley, the gallery owner. It focuses on artists historically connected to the Bradford region, many of whom trained at local Mechanics’ Institutes or art schools in Bradford, Keighley, and Shipley. The works primarily depict local landscapes, reflecting both rural and urban scenes from the area.

Artistic themes and historical context

The exhibition features a variety of paintings that capture the dramatic changes in the region over time. For example, Arthur McArthur’s views of Bradford from the 1870s show the city before the construction of its notable Victorian architecture. These urban scenes contrast with rural depictions of canals, rivers, farmland, and moorland, which remain more familiar and unchanged.

Visitors will also see a range of artistic styles, from traditional painters to those who challenged the conventions of their time, illustrating the evolving nature of art in the region.
