University of Bradford Supports Local Football Club

Bradford City AFC received additional backing from the University of Bradford during a recent home game. The event, held on 31 January 2026, coincided with the club’s 1-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers in Sky Bet League One and provided an opportunity for fans to learn more about the University’s activities and academic offerings.
Activities and Engagement at the Match
Before kick-off and during half-time, fans visiting the Morrisons Family Stand concourse were invited to participate in various activities. The University’s School of Management offered an interactive experience where supporters could test their skills as football managers and explore related courses.
Dr Rachel Shrimpton, MBA Director at the University, noted the diverse attendance, highlighting the event’s role in raising awareness of the University across different age groups.
Research and Innovation on Display
Visitors also had the chance to learn about the Plastic Surgery and Burns Research Unit (PSBRU) based at the University. Attendees, including the club mascot Billy Bantam, took part in a challenge involving the Bradford Sling, an arm support device developed by Professor David Sharpe, founder of the unit.
Dr Kirsten Riches-Suman, Associate Professor of Biomedical Science, commented on the opportunity to engage with fans and showcase the research conducted at the Burns Unit.
Virtual Reality Project Highlights Club Heritage
The event featured a presentation of ‘Stories from Valley Parade’, a virtual reality project that digitally recreates the University of Bradford Stadium, known traditionally as Valley Parade. This project allows users to explore the stadium and the club’s history through immersive technology.
Professor Chris Gaffney, Professor of Archaeological Science, explained that the project has involved public participation for nearly a year and that events like this help deepen understanding of the supporters’ connection to the club.
Additional Matchday Contributions
- A group of 20 flagbearers, aged between six and sixteen and children of University staff and students, welcomed players onto the pitch before the match, wearing University-branded T-shirts.
- Two University staff members, Amy Moore and Wahid Hamaway, took part in a half-time penalty shoot-out challenge, with Amy Moore scoring the most goals within 60 seconds.
- University students, including Film and Media Studies student Vusumuzi Sibanda, contributed as content creators during the event.
Ongoing Partnership with Bradford City AFC
The University of Bradford has maintained a sponsorship agreement with Bradford City AFC since 2022. This includes the University’s logo appearing on the team’s kits and the renaming of Valley Parade as the University of Bradford Stadium. The partnership marks the University’s 60th anniversary year, reflecting its continued involvement in the local community since its establishment in 1966.
