Donation made in memory of brother who died by suicide

A British comic book artist has made a significant donation of £25,000 to Bradford District and Craven Mind, a mental health charity serving the local area. The donation was made in memory of the artist’s brother, who died by suicide in 2024 at the age of 23.

Background and motivation

The artist, Zoe Thorogood, is known for her award-winning work in comics. Following the loss of her brother James, she channelled her grief into her artwork by creating an exclusive holographic print. All proceeds from this print have been donated to UK mental health charities, including Bradford District and Craven Mind.

Zoe Thorogood chose to support Bradford District and Craven Mind because she received personal support from the charity during a difficult period. She described the services as providing a gentle and unrushed environment where she could be open about her struggles without having to pretend she was coping.

“I chose Bradford District and Craven Mind because I know first-hand how much their help can mean when everything feels impossible,” Zoe said.

Impact and charity response

Zoe described her brother as exceptionally kind and expressed that the world should not have lost him. She emphasised the role art has played in her healing process and her desire to use creativity to support mental health causes.

Bradford District and Craven Mind reported that in 2024–25 they supported more than 18,500 people across Bradford District and Craven. The donation from Zoe Thorogood will contribute directly to sustaining these vital services.

Steven Bancroft, Director of Bradford District and Craven Mind, commented on the donation:

“We are so grateful for the passion, creativity and commitment behind Zoe’s campaign. This donation has raised funds towards our vital mental health services. We know that creativity can often play a crucial role in supporting mental wellbeing, helping people to slow down, process difficult emotions and express what words alone can’t reach.”
