Bradford Students Create Mural Highlighting Climate Crisis

Art project explores environmental issues through collaborative mural

Students at Bradford School of Art have completed a mural project focusing on the environmental challenges facing the planet. The initiative, titled Our Changing Planet, involved 28 Level 2 Art and Design students who worked together over eight weeks to produce a large-scale artwork addressing themes such as pollution, deforestation, and wildlife extinction.

Project details and themes

Under the guidance of lecturers Kulvinder Reehal and Rich Jones, the students researched various environmental issues before developing and scaling their designs onto a corridor wall within the college. The resulting mural serves as a visual representation of the urgency of climate change and human impact on the natural world. The space now functions as both an exhibition and a discussion point for students, staff, and visitors.

Alongside the mural, participants created three-dimensional pieces using recycled materials, incorporating techniques from illustration, sculpture, printmaking, and digital art. This approach emphasised sustainability not only in the message but also in the materials and methods used.

Student and staff perspectives

  • Kulvinder Reehal, Art & Design Lecturer, described the project as an opportunity for students to explore real-world issues and express their perspectives through creativity.
  • Martina Shifari, a Level 2 student, contributed artwork highlighting the effects of industrial pollution on smaller species. She noted that the project helps raise awareness and educates people on how they can contribute to environmental protection.
  • Chelsie Naylor, Bradford College Sustainability Lead, commented that projects like this help young people connect creativity with climate awareness and encourage positive community change.

Educational impact

The project aimed to develop students’ artistic skills while fostering collaboration and critical thinking. Many students found inspiration in each other’s work, enhancing the collective outcome. The mural and accompanying pieces stand as a testament to the role of student voices in addressing environmental concerns.

This initiative reflects a growing emphasis on integrating sustainability and social responsibility within educational settings, encouraging the next generation to engage actively with climate issues.
