Football Project Supports Literacy Development in Bradford Schools
March 23, 2026Local initiative uses football to enhance pupils’ writing and communication skills
The Bradford (Park Avenue) Sports Foundation has recently completed the first phase of a literacy project aimed at pupils in the BD6 and BD7 areas of Bradford. The programme, titled Words of the Game, integrates football with literacy and oracy development, providing a creative learning experience linked to live football matches.
Matchday workshop encourages engagement with writing
As part of the initial phase, students attended a live football match at Horsfall Community Stadium. During this event, they participated in a structured workshop focused on writing match reports. Pupils were tasked with observing the game closely, analysing key moments, and capturing these in written form. This approach was designed to make writing more relevant and engaging by connecting it with the excitement of a live football match.
The workshop aimed to develop both writing and communication skills, fostering a stronger connection between football and literacy among the young participants.
Partnerships underpin project delivery
The project has been funded by the Pitching In Trident Community Fund and delivered in collaboration with TagTiv8 and Burley Banksy. These partnerships have provided the resources and creative input necessary to bring the programme to life and respond to educational needs within the local community.

Next steps for Words of the Game
Following the success of the first phase, the Sports Foundation plans to continue working with local schools to deliver the second phase of the project. This next stage will focus on further in-school engagement, helping pupils to build on the skills developed during the matchday workshop and encouraging continued growth in writing and creativity.
Encouraging young voices through sport
Beyond literacy, Words of the Game aims to provide young people with a platform to express themselves and build confidence. The project highlights how football can serve as a valuable tool for education and personal development.
More information about the project and future activities is expected as the Sports Foundation progresses with the upcoming phases.
