Weekly sessions offer exercise and social support for people with Parkinson’s

A walking football group designed for people with Parkinson’s Disease and other mobility conditions has seen a steady increase in attendance since its launch in Bradford. The sessions, held weekly at BEAP Community Partnership, provide participants with an opportunity to engage in tailored physical activity alongside others facing similar challenges.

Participant profile: Steven Fox

Steven Fox, 62, from Harden, Bradford, has been attending the sessions for about a year. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2023, Steven experiences symptoms including mobility difficulties, a right-side tremor, tendonitis, and challenges with processing information and multitasking. Before joining the group, he reported feeling a lack of motivation and general lethargy.

Since participating in the walking football sessions, Steven has noticed improvements in his energy levels, mobility, and mood. He has also gained confidence in performing complex tasks and enjoys the social aspect of the sessions. Steven highlighted the value of the support network and the opportunity to meet others with similar conditions.

Session details and coaching

  • Sessions take place every Friday from 11am to 12pm at BEAP Community Partnership, 31 Cornwall Rd, Bradford BD8 7JN.
  • The sessions are free to attend and open to anyone with Parkinson’s or other mobility-affecting conditions.
  • Coached by Andrei Condoiu, who adapts training to suit participants’ needs and encourages inclusive, accessible sport.

Andrei Condoiu, the coach, described the sessions as a highlight of his work, emphasising the positive atmosphere and the benefits participants gain from the football-based activities. He praised Steven as a committed participant who inspires others.

Growth and community impact

The first dedicated Parkinson’s Walking Football session took place in April 2025 with just four participants. By February 2026, the group regularly attracts over a dozen players. The sessions are supported by Parkinson’s UK and the EFL in the Community programme.

Steven Fox commented on the growth of the group and the importance of the project: “When it started it was not widely publicised or attended, but with help from Bradford City FC Community Foundation and Parkinson’s UK Yorkshire the attendance has grown. The coaches are excellent, researching Parkinson’s and tailoring the training to challenge us.”
