Bradford City Launches Friendship Walks for Older Adults
May 19, 2026New initiative encourages activity and social connection among older residents
Bradford City FC Community Foundation has introduced the Friendship Walks project, aimed at supporting older adults in Bradford, including those living with dementia or mild cognitive impairments, along with their carers. The scheme seeks to promote physical activity, wellbeing, and social interaction through regular walks around local landmarks.
Project Details and Objectives
The Friendship Walks project is funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and involves fortnightly walks to various sites of interest within Bradford and the surrounding district. Locations include:
- Saltaire, a notable heritage site
- Haworth
- Bradford Cathedral
- University of Bradford Stadium
Participants are encouraged to bring phones or cameras to capture images during the walks. These photographs will be compiled into an exhibition that highlights Bradford’s history and showcases the perspectives and creativity of those involved.
Additional Activities
Alongside the walks, the project offers creativity sessions at the Foundation’s City Hub. These sessions provide opportunities for participants to plan future walks, reflect on their experiences, share photographs, and connect with others in a supportive environment.
Comments from Project Lead and Local Officials
Pavan Sembi, Head of Community Engagement and Inclusion at the Bradford City FC Community Foundation and lead for the Friendship Walks, stated that the sessions aim to promote physical wellbeing and encourage participants to share their knowledge and personal insights about Bradford. He expressed hope that participants would develop a deeper connection with the city’s heritage and be able to express their appreciation for their home.
West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin commented on the project, emphasising the importance of providing opportunities for all residents to enjoy the region and meet new people. She highlighted the walks’ role in boosting wellbeing, fostering community belonging, and contributing to a healthier West Yorkshire.
