Community gathers to remember academic and advocate

The University of Bradford has expressed deep sorrow following the death of Professor Jason Arday, a prominent academic known for his work on equality, diversity, and inclusion. Professor Arday, who was Cambridge University’s youngest Black professor, had close ties with the Bradford academic community and was recognised for his contributions to social mobility and support for ethnically minoritised researchers.

Professor Arday’s connection with Bradford University

Professor Arday engaged with the University of Bradford on several occasions. In 2023, he visited the campus to discuss decolonising research with academic staff. He also served as the headline speaker at an online networking event in 2025 focused on empowering ethnically minoritised PhD students and early career researchers.

Tributes and community response

On Monday 16 August, a vigil was held in Bradford’s Centenary Square to honour Professor Arday’s life and legacy. The event was led by Professor Udy Archibong, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Bradford. Professor Gillian Murray, Vice-Chancellor of the University, spoke at the vigil alongside staff, students, and members of the local community.

In her speech, Professor Murray highlighted Professor Arday’s support for the University’s mission and noted Bradford’s recognition as the top university in England for social mobility for five consecutive years. She emphasised the importance of the city’s diverse population and the benefits of its rich mix of ethnic backgrounds, cultures, and faiths.

Challenges faced and ongoing support

Professor Arday was open about his experiences as a neurodivergent individual and faced intense public scrutiny and personal criticism in recent times. The University acknowledged the impact of his death on its community and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting staff and students, particularly those who may feel vulnerable.

The University of Bradford has stated its dedication to continuing the work Professor Arday championed, aiming to provide opportunities and support for people from all backgrounds to succeed.
