Local initiative encourages children to read with new national theme

The Bradford Literature Festival has announced its support for the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge, a nationwide programme designed to encourage children to develop a love of reading outside the classroom. The 2026 challenge, organised by The Reading Agency, will run under the theme “Read to the Beat!”

About the Summer Reading Challenge

Running annually since 1999, the Summer Reading Challenge aims to engage children in reading during the summer holidays. It is a free activity accessible to all children and has attracted over half a million participants each year for more than 25 years.

The challenge seeks to address concerns about children’s reading habits, noting that only one in three children currently enjoy reading. The Reading Agency reports that 95% of children who complete the challenge continue to read for enjoyment on a weekly basis.

Impact and reach

  • In 2025, the challenge resulted in over 100,000 new library memberships.
  • During the summer months of 2025, 13.4 million books were borrowed as part of the programme.

2026 Theme: Read to the Beat!

The 2026 theme celebrates the connection between reading and music. The Reading Agency has partnered with Universal Music Group to highlight how music can inspire and connect people, with the theme aiming to bring this experience to life through reading.

The challenge features illustrations by award-winning author and illustrator Harry Woodgate. A collection of 55 books has been curated for the “Read to the Beat!” theme, selected from over 200 submissions with input from reading specialists and industry experts.

Additional information

  • The Summer Reading Challenge is part of the National Year of Reading 2026, which emphasises the importance of encouraging reading across the UK.
