Author Cathryn Kemp to Discuss Icelandic Witch Trials

An evening with author Cathryn Kemp is scheduled for Thursday 27 August 2026, offering attendees the chance to explore her novel They Can’t Burn Us All, which is a feminist retelling of Iceland’s Kirkjuból witch trials. The event will take place at Wave of Nostalgia in Haworth and will also be accessible via Zoom.
About the novel
They Can’t Burn Us All is set in 1655 in the Westfjords of Iceland during a period of religious upheaval and witch-hunting. The story follows Þuríður Jónsdóttir, who has grown up immersed in the old pagan beliefs and rune magic practiced by her father and brother. However, a wave of witch hunts, influenced by the Protestant Reformation, targets men of learning rather than women, which is unusual compared to other parts of Europe.
When Þuríður’s father and brother are accused of witchcraft and sentenced to be burned at the stake, Þuríður faces increasing danger herself as she becomes the first woman to be labelled a witch. The novel explores themes of persecution, justice, and resistance amid social and religious change.
