October 16, 2026Explore Wearable Technology and Stage Costumes This Autumn
The National Science and Media Museum is hosting a family-friendly event titled “Design and Shine” from 25 September to 28 November 2026. The event offers a range of activities centred on wearable technology, light, materials, and performance, aimed primarily at children and families.
Event Details and Activities
“Design and Shine” invites visitors to explore how light and movement contribute to stage performances through various interactive experiences. The event includes:
- Design Your Own Wearable Tech – On Saturdays from 25 September to 17 October, and on 7, 14, and 28 November, visitors can drop in between 10:00 and 16:00 to build simple electronic circuits and create light-up wristbands. Participants can also investigate how light interacts with different fabrics, examine colours, textures, and patterns under microscopes, and design stage costumes inspired by Eurovision. This activity is suitable for children aged five and above, with some activities appropriate for younger children.
- Pop Academy: Dress Up and Photo Opportunity – Available daily from 10:00 to 17:00, visitors can dress up in Eurovision-themed costumes and take photos in the museum’s main foyer. This activity is free and open to all ages.
- Setting the Stage: The Game Show – Running on Saturdays until 28 November, this interactive game show allows families to compete by testing their knowledge of Eurovision Song Contest technology over the past 70 years. Timings vary, and visitors are advised to check on arrival or ask museum staff for details.
- Pop Academy Trail – A self-guided daily trail around the museum that explores what it takes to become a pop star. This activity is free and suitable for all ages.
