Bradford Students Gain Insight into Modern Policing
November 2, 2026West Yorkshire Police Visit Provides Practical Experience
Students studying Level 2 and Level 3 Uniformed Public Services (UPS) at Bradford College recently took part in an interactive event designed to offer a detailed look into contemporary policing. The visit from West Yorkshire Police Services (WYPS) at the Trinity Green campus gave learners the opportunity to engage with serving officers and explore various aspects of police work.
Workshops Cover Specialist Policing Areas
The event was structured around three workshops, each focusing on different specialist teams within WYPS. Topics included safeguarding vulnerable individuals, tackling organised crime, counter-terrorism efforts, and managing public order situations. Officers explained how these teams collaborate to protect communities and respond to diverse incidents.
Hands-On Experience with Policing Equipment
Students were able to handle specialist equipment used in policing, including body cameras and protective riot gear. The sessions also covered the role of police dogs in operations and introduced specialist response procedures aimed at maintaining public safety.
Direct Engagement with Serving Officers
One of the key benefits of the visit was the chance for students to hear real-life experiences from police officers. This interaction helped to contextualise classroom learning and provided insight into the skills and professionalism required in public service roles.
Supporting Career Development
Gary Maindonald, Curriculum Team Leader at Bradford College, highlighted the importance of such events in preparing students for future employment or further education. He noted that direct contact with industry professionals helps bridge the gap between education and the workplace, enhancing students’ understanding of potential career paths within the emergency services and wider public sector.
