Music Lovers Invited to Enjoy Music at the Museum at Cliffe Castle

Bradford Council’s Museums and Galleries Service is set to host a musical extravaganza this week at the historic Cliffe Castle in Keighley.

The “Music at the Museum: LATES” event, taking place on Thursday, 18 July, from 5pm to 9pm, promises an evening filled with rhythm, beats, and a journey through the castle’s rich musical heritage.

This unique event will feature an array of musical performances, including DJ sets by Kirran Shah and Rosie Freeman, who will be spinning tunes throughout the night. Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, dhol drummers will bring an energetic bhangra beat to the evening, ensuring a lively and engaging experience for all attendees.

Heather Millard, a community curator for the Museums and Galleries Service, will offer insights into the musical tastes of the Butterfield family, the original owners of Cliffe Castle. Her talk will delve into the family’s love for music, which saw them inviting composers and musicians from across Europe to perform at the castle.

In addition, local creative Stuart Kaplan will showcase Cliffe Castle’s lithophone, a unique musical instrument made of rock pieces that produce musical notes when struck. For those with a crafty side, Nicola Murray from KYND Arts & Crafts will lead a drop-in workshop where attendees can whittle their own whistles from elder wood.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, highlighted the event’s significance:

“With live music, DJ sets, demonstrations and activities as well as stalls to explore, this promises to be a glorious summer evening of memories, beats and melodies.”

Councillor Ferriby also noted the Butterfield family’s historical connection to music, stating:

“The Butterfields, the original owners of Cliffe Castle had a love of music, inviting composers and musicians from across Europe to stay and perform as well as hosting a number of balls. In recent years we’ve carried on this tradition, inviting community-based bands to perform once a month in the magnificent Bracewell Smith Hall. This event is first in a trial of evening events at the museum and if successful more events will be organised across our other museums.”

Refreshments will be available on the night, supplied by local business Coffee Bean Machine, offering a selection of hot and cold non-alcoholic beverages and homemade treats.
