New Image

AFTER-IMAGE is a reflection on how confinement affects creativity, working patterns, and the artist’s relationship with the immediate environment. For photographer Suzy Mitchell, recollections of unconstrained travel, beyond the borders of the visible horizon, are visualised in the intense hues of her fine art prints.

For Helen Brayshaw, the onset of lockdown resulted in a creative breakthrough. Finding it difficult to get hold of paint, her studio supplies dwindled rapidly. In an attempt to eke out what was left, she diluted the paint with water and started pouring instead of painting.
Helen prepares multiple batches of hand-mixed liquid paint, which she pours directly onto the canvas. Using colours which reference the changing sky and landscape, the poured paint collides and mingles, arranging itself into semi-abstract images with no further intervention.

Suzy Mitchell is an award winning photographer and a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society. Helen Brayshaw’s paintings are held in national public collections, and private collections worldwide, including her 2017 ‘Halved Avocado’ painting which is owned by the Duchess of Cornwall.
