Bradford Accordion Band has been shortlisted for the 2026 Royal Philharmonic Society Inspiration Award, which recognises non-professional music-makers who bring communities together through music.

The group, a 38-piece community ensemble founded in 1997 by Musical Director Anita Bašić, includes players aged from seven to a member in his nineties, and draws members from a range of cultural backgrounds. BAB’s performances celebrate the piano accordion through a broad repertoire spanning classical favourites, pop, rock, folk and original pieces.

A recent highlight for the band included a performance as part of the Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture programme.

Anita Bašić said:

“This nomination is a wonderful recognition of everything our members pour into BAB – the joy of making music together, regardless of age, ability or background – and sharing it with others. The accordion is the best instrument in the world and this platform will help us to reach and inspire new audiences. We’re thrilled to represent Bradford on a national stage and would love the support of our local community to help us go all the way.”

Band member David Tong said:

“Anita Bašić recruited her nervous accordion pupils to form a band back in 1997, and what fun we’ve had ever since! With her charismatic leadership, we’ve learned to blend as a team and enjoy making music together at weekly rehearsals. It thrills us all to see the pleasure our performances give, and to know that each of us contributes. 28 years on, some of the original band members are still involved, spurred on by many talented new arrivals. Kudos to Anita for instilling us all with confidence and enriching so many lives in the process!”

The RPS Inspiration Award highlights groups described by the society as “local heroes” who bring people together through music throughout the year.

RPS Chief Executive James Murphy said:

“Wherever you live in the UK, local people get together to make music, drawing the community to join in, and come and listen. Here, in divisive times, we see the very best of our nation, finding strength, joy and optimism in what unites us. Thousands of groups like this flourish nationwide and deserve recognition. An expert panel has joined us in selecting four groups especially representative of this spirit, and we invite the public to get involved and pick a winner who particularly inspires them.”

Bradford Accordion Band was shortlisted alongside three other community ensembles: Cantorion Llandrindod, Kirkcaldy Orchestral Society, and Sean Chandler and Shepherd Brass Band.

The winner is due to be announced at the 2026 RPS Awards on Thursday the 12th of March 2026 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre, London.
