Visitor figures soar amid Bradford’s City of Culture year

Bradford Cathedral has reported a significant increase in visitor numbers throughout 2025, coinciding with Bradford’s designation as the UK City of Culture. The cathedral has experienced more than double the usual number of drop-in visitors compared to previous years since records began.

Visitor statistics and origins

According to Maggie Myers, Director of Education and Visitors at Bradford Cathedral, the visitors have come from across the UK and internationally, with recorded guests from at least 36 different countries. These figures are based on those who have interacted with the cathedral’s welcome team or left comments in the Visitors’ Book, suggesting the actual total is likely higher.

Expanded programme of tours and events

To accommodate the increased interest, the cathedral has expanded its offerings, providing a range of tours and events throughout the year. These include:

  • Guided tours focusing on the cathedral’s history, stained glass, textiles, and architecture
  • Large-scale music events and exhibitions
  • Educational visits and family activities
  • A two-day event for crafters
  • The Heritage Open Day with an emphasis on female-led creativity and design
  • An outdoor timeline display illustrating the cathedral’s history since Saxon times

Many visitors have also attended services, experiencing the spiritual and musical aspects of the cathedral.

Cultural projects and performances

The Revd Ned Lunn, Canon for Intercultural Mission and the Arts, highlighted several key initiatives that contributed to the year’s success. The ‘Weaving Stories’ project invited visitors to contribute to a tapestry reflecting Bradford’s heritage and diverse community, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Other notable events included:

  • The ‘Holocene’ performance during the New Music Biennial, which featured a contemporary brass ensemble exploring the current geological epoch
  • The launch of the Cathedrals Cycle Relay from Bradford Cathedral in May, marking a significant cultural moment for the city

These activities, alongside regular tours, exhibitions, and concerts, have contributed to an exceptional year for Bradford Cathedral, attracting visitors from around the world and highlighting the city’s cultural vibrancy.
