Bradford Cathedral Welcomes New Interim Dean and Launches Lent Activities
February 19, 2026Seasonal changes mark new beginnings at Bradford Cathedral
As spring approaches, Bradford Cathedral is preparing for a period of transition and reflection. The cathedral grounds have begun to show signs of the changing season, with snowdrops and crocuses emerging despite the continuing damp weather. This seasonal shift coincides with the arrival of the new interim Dean, Jonathan, who will be officially installed at a service on Sunday, 1 March.
New leadership at the cathedral
Jonathan’s installation marks a new chapter for the cathedral community. Alongside him, Joanne will also be welcomed back to Bradford. The service invites members of the public to join in welcoming the new leadership team as they begin their roles within the cathedral family.
Lent observances and spiritual activities
With Easter falling early this year, Lent has already begun. The 40-day period offers an opportunity for personal reflection and spiritual focus. The cathedral is facilitating this through a series of Lent courses based on the Church of England’s “Draw Near” material. These courses, available both in person and online, encourage participants to explore spiritual practices such as fasting, silence, and prayer.
Later in the month, Bishop Toby will lead a day of retreat at the cathedral, providing further opportunity for reflection on these practices during Lent.
Music and community events
Music continues to be a significant aspect of life at Bradford Cathedral. Regular choir performances take place during Sunday services and evensong, with rehearsals throughout the week. The cathedral also hosts candlelight concerts and other musical events.
A notable upcoming event is a performance of Handel’s Messiah scheduled for the end of March, which is expected to attract a wide audience.
Choir activities and fundraising efforts
The cathedral choir includes a diverse group of choristers, with opportunities for young singers to join and participate in activities such as the annual choir tour. This year, the tour is planned for Scotland. To ensure that financial constraints do not prevent participation, the Director of Music is undertaking a fundraising hike from Ripon to Bradford.
Parents and guardians interested in choir opportunities for their children are encouraged to learn more about the “Be a Chorister for a Day” event, designed to introduce potential new members to the choir experience.
