Dr Cathy Clarkson recognised for contributions to ESOL teaching and research

A lecturer at Bradford College has been acknowledged for her work in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) education, both through academic publications and a new national leadership role.

Dr Cathy Clarkson, who teaches PSET and holds a Trinity Certificate in TESOL, has recently published articles in several respected language education journals. One of her articles, featured in Learning English Plus, reflects on the delivery and outcomes of a Pathways course at Bradford College. The course aims to support ESOL learners in their language development and integration.

In the same journal, a student from the course, Olga Kovalenko, also had an article published titled Laughter and Learning in the ESOL Classroom, sharing her perspective on the learning experience.

Doctoral research published internationally

Dr Clarkson’s doctoral research has been published in the Oxford Academic ELT Journal, an internationally recognised publication. Her article, Rethinking CELTA Observations: Using Text-Chat in Teaching Practice, explores new approaches to teacher development and classroom methods, particularly focusing on the use of technology to enhance teaching practice.

National leadership role in ESOL sector

In addition to her publications, Dr Clarkson has been appointed Co-Chair of NATECLA, the national professional organisation for ESOL teachers. In this capacity, she will support practitioners across the UK and contribute to discussions on ESOL policy and provision at a national level.

Dr Clarkson commented on her appointment, emphasising her commitment to supporting multilingual learners and promoting innovative and inclusive teaching informed by research.

Impact on teaching and learners

These achievements highlight Dr Clarkson’s expertise and ongoing dedication to the ESOL sector. Her work demonstrates the connection between research and classroom practice, as well as the role of educators in shaping policy and supporting learners.

Bradford College continues to provide opportunities for both staff and students to engage with current developments in language education, aiming to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in ESOL programmes.
