Local travel and tourism students gain practical experience in city centre hotel

Last week, Level 3 Year 1 Travel and Tourism students from Bradford College took part in a week-long practical placement at The Leonardo Hotel in Bradford city centre. This initiative allowed students to engage directly with hotel operations, offering them hands-on experience in various departments under the supervision of hotel staff.

Immersive Industry Experience

During the takeover, students were involved in a range of hotel functions, including:

  • Front-of-house operations and guest check-ins
  • Housekeeping duties
  • Food and beverage preparation
  • Customer service management

The students had the opportunity to welcome and assist actual hotel guests, shadow experienced managers and staff, and respond to live customer enquiries. This exposure provided insight into daily hotel logistics, team communication, and the demands of the hospitality sector.

Collaboration Between Education and Industry

The partnership between Bradford College and The Leonardo Hotel aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world work environments. By entrusting students with genuine responsibilities, the hotel contributed to the development of practical skills such as leadership, service delivery, and professionalism.

This collaboration supports the growth of Bradford’s visitor economy by preparing students for potential careers in hospitality and tourism, whether through apprenticeships, employment, or further study.

Feedback and Future Prospects

Staff from both Bradford College and The Leonardo Hotel noted the students’ professionalism, enthusiasm, and teamwork throughout the placement. The event has prompted discussions about continuing and expanding such collaborations, including additional work placements and career development opportunities for students.

This initiative reflects ongoing efforts to provide meaningful workplace experiences for young people in the region, contributing to workforce development within the local hospitality industry.
