Construction T Level students explore ancient architecture in Italy

Fifteen second-year students from Bradford College’s T Level Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction course recently took part in a four-day educational trip to Rome. The visit aimed to provide practical insights into historic and modern construction methods by examining some of the city’s most famous architectural sites.

Exploring Rome’s Architectural Heritage

During their visit, the students toured several key landmarks, including:

  • The Colosseum
  • The Pantheon
  • The Catacombs
  • Vatican City
  • St Peter’s Basilica (including a climb to the dome)
  • The Vittoriano Monument rooftop via glass lift
  • The Spanish Steps

These visits allowed students to observe firsthand the construction techniques used by the ancient Romans and consider their influence on contemporary building practices. The panoramic views from St Peter’s Basilica and the Vittoriano Monument provided additional perspectives on the city’s architectural layout.

Educational and Personal Development

For many participants, the trip was their first experience travelling abroad and flying. The opportunity to engage with international architecture and culture was designed to complement their classroom studies and broaden their understanding of the construction industry.

Kevin Fish, a construction tutor at Bradford College, commented on the purpose of the visit:

“The trip allowed students to explore incredible examples of architecture and construction, comparing ancient Roman methods with those used today. Many construction principles developed thousands of years ago remain relevant in the industry. Beyond this, it gave students the chance to experience the world beyond Bradford, building confidence and encouraging them to consider wider career possibilities.”

Supporting Career Readiness

This visit is part of Bradford College’s broader approach to enhance student learning through real-world experiences. By connecting theoretical knowledge with practical observation, the college aims to prepare students for future careers in construction and related fields.
