Bradford Culture Company Launches Nature-Focused Events

New programme brings art and nature together across Bradford district

A series of cultural events celebrating nature is set to take place across the Bradford district this autumn, organised by Bradford Culture Company. The programme aims to build on the legacy of Bradford’s year as UK City of Culture 2025 by offering experiences in outdoor and rural settings, linking communities with the district’s natural environment.

Harmonic Fields on Baildon Moor

From 9 to 13 September, Baildon Moor will host an outdoor musical installation called Harmonic Fields. The event features over 200 rare, nature-powered instruments including woodwind, string, and percussion ensembles. These instruments, such as vibrating drums, windmill glockenspiels, and bamboo flutes, are played by the wind and performers known as ‘wind farmers’. Visitors can explore the moorland and listen to this unique symphonic experience while enjoying panoramic views across Bradford.

Flower Carpet UK Premiere in Bradford City Centre

Between 24 and 27 September, Centenary Square in Bradford city centre will display the UK premiere of the internationally renowned Flower Carpet project. Created by local artist Shiraaz Ali, the installation is inspired by Bradford’s industrial and textile heritage. It features a 29-metre-wide design made from over 300,000 dahlia flowerheads, which will be assembled live by a team of 40 participants. The flowerheads will naturally decompose after the event, continuing their lifecycle through local composting. Each evening, the installation will be illuminated with sound and light.

Artist Residencies and Nature Walks

Local artists, musicians, photographers, and writers will participate in three-month residencies focused on the Bradford Pennine Gateway National Nature Reserve. They will create works inspired by different reserve areas, including Bingley North Bog, Penistone Hill, and Trench Meadows. Their projects will include soundwalks, performances, and visual art.

A new 18-mile walking route through the National Nature Reserve will launch in September, connecting eight sites. On 19 September, a ‘challenge walk’ will take place from Ilkley Moor to Penistone Hill, passing through Baildon Moor, Shipley Glen, Trench Meadows, Bingley North Bog, St Ives, and Harden Moor. Shorter guided walks and family activities will also be available on the same day.

Film Screening at Pictureville Cinema

On 10 October, the National Science and Media Museum’s Pictureville Cinema will host a screening of Super Nature, a 2025 film by Ed Sayers. The film, shot entirely on Super 8 cameras, showcases natural landscapes from 25 countries across land, air, and underwater environments.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Nature Season supports the Harmonic Fields and Flower Carpet events.
Bradford Council, Calderdale Council, Kirklees Council, Leeds City Council, Wakefield Council, and the West Yorkshire Local Visitor Economy Partnership are partners in Nature Season.
The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports the artist residencies, walks, and film screening.
