Bradford District Council Elections Scheduled for May 2026

Full council election to take place following boundary review

On Thursday 7 May 2026, all 90 seats of Bradford District Council will be contested in a full council election, an event not seen since 2004. This comprehensive election follows a review of ward boundaries conducted by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England, with changes approved by Parliament in April 2025.

Background to the election

Bradford Council usually elects its members in thirds, with approximately 30 councillors elected each year over a three-year cycle, followed by a fallow year without elections. However, the upcoming election will temporarily depart from this pattern due to the boundary changes.

The district will continue to have 30 wards, each represented by three councillors, maintaining a total of 90 council seats. The difference in this election lies in the term lengths assigned to the three councillors elected per ward, which will reintroduce the election-by-thirds system gradually over the following years.

Term lengths for elected councillors

  • First place candidate: Four-year term, next election in May 2030
  • Second place candidate: Two-year term, next election in May 2028
  • Third place candidate: One-year term, next election in May 2027

This staggered approach will restore the usual electoral cycle after the 2026 election.

Political context

Labour has held majority control of Bradford Council for most of the past 45 years, continuously since 2014. However, the 2024 elections saw Labour’s seat count fall to its lowest level in eight years, with independent candidates making gains. The May 2026 election will test whether this trend continues, diminishes, or is influenced by national shifts such as the rise of Reform UK.

The full council election on new ward boundaries represents a significant reset for Bradford’s political landscape, with every seat contested and the balance of power uncertain.
