Placement year offers practical experience for aspiring solicitors

Two students preparing to study or having recently completed the Law degree at the University of Bradford have highlighted the value of the programme’s placement year. The work placement, which takes place in the third year of the four-year LLB (Hons) Law course, is seen as a key factor in gaining practical experience and improving employment prospects in the legal profession.

Student perspectives on the placement year

Malika Hussain, 18, is set to begin the Law degree in September 2026. She chose the University of Bradford because it offers a placement year, which she believes will provide vital experience as she aims to become a solicitor specialising in family law.

Malika said that many employers now expect candidates to have work experience, and the placement year will help her get ahead when applying for jobs. She also noted the convenience of studying close to home and the opportunity to meet new people at university.

Her interest in law was sparked by personal experience following her parents’ separation and the subsequent legal proceedings concerning custody arrangements.

Malika also encouraged prospective students to consider applying through Clearing, emphasising that it is not a last resort but an opportunity to explore a wide range of courses.

Graduate highlights benefits of placement experience

Komal Iqbal, 22, who recently completed the LLB Law programme at Bradford, completed her placement year working in the University’s Students’ Union. She described the experience as transformative, helping her develop personally and professionally.

Komal said that having placement experience gave her an advantage when seeking legal roles, as employers appreciate candidates who already have practical knowledge. She is currently looking for a paralegal position and traineeship.

She praised the Law School academics for their support and noted that the course includes opportunities to meet real-life clients, enhancing students’ practical understanding.
