About the Big Walk and Wheel Challenge
The Big Walk and Wheel is the UK’s largest active travel challenge for schools. It aims to increase the number of children using sustainable and active modes of transport for their journey to and from school. Participating schools record the number of pupils who walk, cycle, scoot, or use a wheelchair during the event period.
How Schools Can Participate
- Schools need to register to take part in the challenge.
- The event runs for two weeks, from 16 to 27 March 2026.
- During this time, pupils are encouraged to travel actively to school.
- Schools can track participation and contribute to their local and national results.
The challenge is designed to promote physical activity, reduce traffic congestion around schools, and improve air quality. It also provides an opportunity for schools to engage with pupils and families about the benefits of active travel.
