Bradford Students Explore AI Careers in Government and Industry
February 27, 2026Experts from Alan Turing Institute discuss AI opportunities
The University of Bradford recently hosted a session focused on career opportunities in artificial intelligence (AI) and data science, featuring experts from the Alan Turing Institute. The event aimed to provide students with insights into how AI skills can be applied across various sectors, including government agencies such as GCHQ, MI5, and MI6.
Industry demand for AI and data science skills
Timipado Imomotebegha, a Data Science Facilitator at the Alan Turing Institute, addressed students studying AI, computer science, software engineering, and cyber security. She highlighted the rapid development of AI technologies and the growing need for graduates with relevant skills. Imomotebegha emphasised that AI expertise can be used to solve real-world problems and that career opportunities exist in academia, industry, and government.
Her presentation included guidance on applying for roles within intelligence and security organisations such as GCHQ, MI5, and MI6. She noted positive engagement from students and expressed confidence in their understanding of AI and its applications.
Additional perspectives and student feedback
Dr Stefan Helfrich, team lead at the German-based Educators Alliance for KNIME, an open-source data science platform, also spoke at the event. The session was organised by Professor Ciprian Daniel Neagu, head of the AI Research Group at Bradford and academic liaison for the Turing University Network, which Bradford joined in 2023.
Students responded positively to the event. Third-year computer science exchange student Fernando Vasconcellos described it as a valuable opportunity to gain careers advice. Final-year student Suleman Riaz commented that the session broadened his perspective beyond the private sector, highlighting public sector roles as interesting career paths.
University’s role in AI education and career preparation
Professor Neagu stated that the University of Bradford is among the UK’s leading institutions in AI and data science education. He noted that the event was designed to showcase the range of career options available to graduates and to demonstrate the sector’s strong demand for skilled professionals capable of developing AI solutions.
The audience included undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD students, as well as university staff. Many attendees reported increased confidence in navigating the current job market and a better understanding of opportunities in AI-related fields.
