Bradford Council Receives Recognition at RTPI Yorkshire Excellence Awards

Bradford Council has been recognised at the RTPI Yorkshire Excellence Awards, with its Townscape Heritage Scheme receiving the award for Best Heritage-led Regeneration Project. The Council also received a Commendation for Best Planning Authority.

Townscape Heritage Scheme Achievement

The award-winning Townscape Heritage Scheme was implemented in Bradford’s historic ‘Top of Town’ area. The project included conservation-led improvements comprising:

  • Shopfront improvements
  • Restoration of historic features, including the listed statue of Richard Oastler
  • Public realm enhancements featuring traditional Yorkstone paving, street trees and rain gardens
  • Support for local businesses and skills development

The scheme aimed to integrate heritage conservation with contemporary urban planning standards in the city centre.

Planning Authority Recognition

The Council’s Commendation for Best Planning Authority acknowledges its planning and placemaking work across the district.

Council Response

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council’s Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Planning and Transport, said:

“Both of these successes in the awards are a brilliant achievement for Bradford. The Townscape Heritage Scheme shows what’s possible when we put people, heritage, and placemaking at the heart of regeneration. It’s not just about restoring buildings it’s about creating pride, supporting communities, and shaping a city centre that everyone can enjoy and feel part of. This award is a testament to our vision and the team’s dedication to working together to build a better future for Bradford. There are exciting times ahead for this part of the city, with the opening of Darley Street Market and plans progressing well for City Village, which will deliver up to 1,000 new homes as well as green spaces.”

Broader Regeneration Context

The Townscape Heritage Scheme forms part of Bradford Council’s regeneration strategy, which incorporates heritage, culture, and placemaking elements. The Council states this approach aims to create improved environmental and community outcomes across the district.

Future developments in the area include the Darley Street Market opening and the planned City Village development, which is designed to provide up to 1,000 residential units and green spaces.
