Fashion Students Create Dolly Parton-Inspired Jackets for Charity

Local students upcycle jackets in collaboration with Barnardo’s Refashion Hub

Fashion students at Bradford College have recently completed a project transforming pre-loved tailored jackets into unique designs inspired by the life and legacy of Dolly Parton. This initiative was carried out in partnership with Barnardo’s Refashion Hub, aiming to promote sustainable fashion and support charitable fundraising.

Project Overview

The two-week project took place at the start of the academic year. Students customised donated jackets supplied by Barnardo’s, using sustainable fashion techniques to create festival-inspired pieces. Each jacket reflected different elements of Dolly Parton’s fashion, music, philanthropy, and public image.

The project was led by fashion tutor Angela Loftus, who developed the creative brief after being inspired by a social media trend involving embellished jackets. Students were encouraged to use their creativity to design one-off upcycled jackets, incorporating fabrics, embellishments, and details of their choice.

Collaboration with Barnardo’s Refashion Hub

Bradford College has an ongoing relationship with Barnardo’s Refashion Hub, which focuses on giving unwanted clothing a new purpose. The hub collects garments that cannot be sold in their original form and transforms them into new creations with the help of volunteers and students. This process contributes to reducing textile waste and promotes sustainable fashion practices.

Student Designs and Inspirations

• Zara created a vibrant pink jacket inspired by Dolly Parton’s femininity, describing the design process as enjoyable and an opportunity to explore beyond Dolly’s music.
• Sakari incorporated black sequins, tassels, and a crown motif to reflect Dolly’s cultural icon status, adding light pink flowers to connect with Dolly’s association with the colour pink.
• Rylie drew inspiration from Southern American fashion and Dolly’s childhood, combining denim and patchwork techniques to challenge stereotypes related to music and style.
• Falak focused on Dolly’s love of sparkle, using abundant sequins in the design after researching Dolly’s fashion choices.

Next Steps and Impact

Following completion, the jackets will be returned to Barnardo’s, where they will be professionally photographed and sold online. The proceeds will support Barnardo’s charitable work. The project emphasised creativity, individuality, and sustainability rather than commercial fashion production.

Angela Loftus highlighted the value of the project for students, noting that each jacket reflects the individual personality and creativity of its maker despite the shared brief. The initiative combined sustainable fashion, creative design, and charitable fundraising, offering students practical experience in designing for a real audience.

This collaboration demonstrates how unwanted garments can be repurposed through creativity and sustainability, while also supporting community causes.
