Bradford College recently hosted a visit from alumna and professional makeup artist Famida Pathan, who returned to deliver a talk and masterclass to students in the creative industries departments. Pathan, who studied at the college in the early 2000s, spoke about her career journey and the challenges she faced entering the makeup industry.
Educational Background and Career Path
Famida Pathan completed Beauty Therapy Levels 2 and 3 at Bradford College before undertaking a two-year Diploma in Media Makeup and Special Effects, graduating around 2004 or 2005. Since then, she has worked across various sectors including beauty, bridal, film, and media makeup.
Challenges Overcome
During her visit, Pathan discussed several obstacles she encountered while establishing her career:
- Financial constraints
- Cultural expectations regarding career choices
- Lack of industry contacts and networking opportunities
- Balancing multiple jobs including freelancing, teaching, and retail roles
She emphasised the importance of resilience and determination, encouraging students to persist despite difficulties.
Observations on College Facilities
Pathan toured the College’s Producing Academy, which now houses departments such as Fashion, Photography, Media Makeup, Performing Arts, and Production under one roof. She noted the improvements compared to when she studied, highlighting that the integrated facilities better prepare students for collaborative work in creative industries.
Impact on Students
The masterclass allowed students to observe Pathan’s professional techniques, ask questions, and gain practical insights into building a career in makeup and special effects. Her visit served as an example of how success in creative fields can be achieved regardless of background.
