Mistry Family trek 10K to say thank you

January 19, 2023 Off By admin

Like many, Anita Mistry was so overwhelmed with gratitude for the doctors and nurses who have cared for her beloved dad in hospital, that she decided to raise money to thank them.

What started as an idea resulted in 20 members of the Mistry Family walking 10K across North Yorkshire, raising more than £7,000.

Anita, of Clayton Heights, Bradford, said: “My dad has been having dialysis for the past five years and I just wanted to do something to give back to the renal ward at St Luke’s Hospital. The staff and doctors have really looked after him. They are like family to him.  We can’t tell you how much we as a family appreciate everything they have done, and are still doing, to keep my dad alive so that we can continue to make more memories together as a family.”

After running the idea of a 10K walk past her family, within minutes several of her relatives had volunteered to take part.

“We are a big family,” she said, “but we all live in different cities. As a family, we just wanted to give back to the ward to help support the staff and patients.”

Between them, the Mistry family raised £7,046 after walking 10K around Malham. “Our family and friends were so kind and generous,” she said. She, her dad (Natwarlal Mistry) and members of her family – including her 102-year-old grandmother – presented their cheque to nursing staff and Dr John Stoves, her dad’s consultant, at St Luke’s Hospital, where he undergoes dialysis.

Sharon Milner, Charity Director for Bradford Hospitals’ Charity, said: “Many of our patients feel immense gratitude for the care and support our doctors and nurses have given them or their family. Giving back to say thank you, either with a donation or by fundraising, can really help us enhance the overall patient experience.

“Our charity exists because of the amazing care given by NHS colleagues across Bradford Teaching Hospitals. We make sure the funds gifted by our grateful patients are used to enhance the service and hospital environment, so that the people of Bradford can enjoy the gold standard health care that they deserve.”

Bradford Hospitals’ Charity has just launched its brand new calendar of events for 2023, offering grateful patients the chance to challenge themselves, while raising money for charity.

While individuals can sign up to various 10Ks, half marathons and marathons, and the Yorkshire Classic cycle race, there are a number of events ideal for teams, such as the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, Tough Mudder, Total Warrior, and It’s a Knockout. Should you or your business wish to take part please see details below.

Bradford Hospitals’ is also offering the opportunity of a lifetime, with a tandem skydive planned for August.

To celebrate 75 years of our NHS this year, supporters are also being encouraged to take on the 75 Squat Challenge. The idea is to do 75 squats each day for a month to raise money.
