Netbooks4All Scheme Provides Laptops to Students in Need
March 30, 2026Efforts to Improve Digital Access for Education
In response to the growing need for digital access in education, the Netbooks4All initiative has been launched to provide refurbished laptops to students who lack suitable devices at home. The scheme aims to address the digital divide that affects many young people’s ability to complete schoolwork and develop essential IT skills.
Programme Structure and Operation
The Netbooks4All scheme operates through a sustainable model involving three key stages:
- Sourcing Devices: Old or unused laptops that no longer meet enterprise cyber security standards are donated by Bradford College IT Services. These devices, which might otherwise be discarded as electronic waste, are repurposed for student use.
- Refurbishment and Data Security: The laptops are wiped and refurbished by Bradford College IT students along with interns from Kings Trust and Project Search. The devices are installed with Google ChromeOS Flex to support students’ educational needs.
- Distribution to Students: Students identified by their departments as having limited digital access are provided with a laptop free of charge, with no additional costs involved.
Impact and Benefits
Since its inception, the programme has distributed over 40 laptops across various departments. One device has even been sent to a student in Kenya. The availability of laptops helps students engage in activities beyond basic schoolwork, including coding, digital art, and online courses. It also supports families by reducing the need to share devices among siblings or use parents’ equipment for job applications.
Environmental and Community Considerations
Netbooks4All also contributes to environmental sustainability by extending the lifespan of existing laptops and reducing electronic waste. This approach minimises the environmental impact associated with manufacturing new devices.
Future Plans
With digital access demands continuing to rise, the programme intends to expand its reach to more departments. The overarching goal is to ensure that no student is disadvantaged due to lack of access to technology.
