Level 3 Science students participate in a two-day camping trip in Bingley

At the end of September, Level 3 Science students from Bradford College took part in a two-day outdoor learning experience at Blackhills Scout Campsite in Bingley. The trip aimed to provide practical learning opportunities and foster resilience by engaging students with nature, despite challenging weather conditions caused by Storm Amy.

Adapting to Weather Challenges

The first night of the trip coincided with a yellow weather warning due to Storm Amy. As a precaution, students spent the evening in on-site huts rather than camping outdoors. Conditions improved on the second night, allowing students to pitch tents and continue their outdoor activities.

Activities and Learning Opportunities

The Blackhills Scout Campsite, managed by the Bradford North and South Scout Districts, served as the venue for various educational and recreational activities, including:

  • Photography sessions
  • Orienteering exercises
  • A Dungeons & Dragons game
  • Exploration of the surrounding forest to identify wild mushrooms and other plant life

Evening campfires provided opportunities for students to cook their own meals and develop teamwork, problem-solving, and independent living skills.

Educational Purpose and Benefits

The outdoor learning experience was designed to help students develop practical skills and build resilience. It also offered a chance to disconnect from technology, as there was no phone signal at the campsite. This allowed students and staff to focus on their surroundings and strengthen their connection with nature and each other.

According to Keely Saint, Science and Technology Academic Lead and one of the camp organisers, the camps aim to introduce young people to nature and outdoor experiences, many of whom may not have camped before or spent significant time outdoors.
