Industry professionals provide practical experience in science

Students at Bradford College recently took part in a science masterclass led by representatives from Solenis, a global company specialising in solutions for water-intensive industries. The session aimed to provide students with insight into scientific careers and practical experience beyond the classroom environment.

Details of the masterclass

The event featured Holly McLeod, who works in business support and communications at Solenis, and Jackie Casagranda, Laboratory Manager, alongside Bradford College’s Chemistry Teacher Simon Marshall. During the session, students engaged in a hands-on experiment designed to enhance their understanding of scientific processes.

The practical activity encouraged students to work independently, follow detailed instructions, and accurately record their observations. Both Holly McLeod and Jackie Casagranda noted the students’ active participation and engagement throughout the session.

Student feedback

  • Issa, a Foundation T Level in Science student, described the masterclass as informative, highlighting its focus on the science industry and its relevance to global issues.
  • Another student, Shayan, also found the session valuable in expanding their understanding of science outside the classroom.

Ongoing partnership between Bradford College and Solenis

The masterclass is part of a continuing collaboration between Bradford College and Solenis, which has included T Level placements, work experience opportunities, site visits, and participation in careers fairs. This partnership aims to strengthen links between education and industry.

Holly McLeod emphasised the importance of providing young people with workplace experience and learning opportunities from industry professionals. She noted that many students and apprentices have joined Solenis’s production department, illustrating how placements can lead to employment and career development.

Jackie Casagranda highlighted the benefits of industry placements for young people, stating they offer practical experience and skill development in a professional scientific environment. She encouraged other employers to consider offering similar opportunities to students.

Supporting future career development

Through initiatives like this masterclass, Bradford College continues to connect students with employers, helping them understand industry requirements and explore potential career paths. These experiences allow students to apply their academic learning in real-world contexts and consider how their skills might shape their futures.
