Local college students contribute to environmental project

Level 1 Pre-Internship students at Bradford College recently took part in a tree planting activity at the Trinity Green outdoor learning space. The project involved planting eight fruit trees, donated by Fruitworks, an organisation that supports communities in Leeds and Bradford with planting and maintaining fruit trees.

Details of the tree planting activity

The planting session was integrated into the students’ learning programme, providing an opportunity to work outdoors and develop teamwork skills. Despite cold weather conditions, students prepared the ground and planted the trees, which are expected to provide fruit and support local wildlife in the future.

Environmental and educational significance

The project aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on Land, which focuses on protecting nature and wildlife, and ensuring land and ecosystems are preserved for future generations. By planting fruit trees, the students are contributing to creating habitats for birds and insects, improving soil health, and enhancing the Trinity Green area for both people and nature.

Comments from staff and students

  • Chelsie Naylor, Sustainability Lead, noted the benefits of outdoor learning, highlighting its positive impact on wellbeing, creativity, and social skills. She emphasised the importance of spending time outdoors for mental and physical health and encouraged more people to use the outdoor learning space.
  • Jenna Gill, Lecturer, praised the students’ enthusiasm and teamwork during the session, commenting on their pride in their work.
  • Students shared their experiences, with Ben mentioning his enjoyment of digging and planting, and plans to water the trees weekly after Easter. Hannah spoke about the physical challenge and feeling stronger afterwards. Ethan highlighted the environmental importance of trees for clean air and wildlife habitats. This tree planting initiative is part of Bradford College’s broader efforts to integrate sustainability, wellbeing, and practical learning into the student experience. It also contributes to the enhancement of local green spaces.
