T Level Students Create Biodiverse Wellbeing Garden at Bradford College

Unused College Space Transformed into Outdoor Learning and Relaxation Area

A previously neglected area at Bradford College has been converted into a biodiverse wellbeing garden by T Level students studying Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction. The project, carried out in partnership with construction firm Morgan Sindall, aims to provide a calm outdoor environment to support student wellbeing, sustainability and learning.

Project Background and Funding

The garden forms part of the wider Junction Mills development, a significant investment in the college’s estate. Work on the adjacent purpose-built automotive and advanced manufacturing facility began in 2024 and is scheduled to open in September 2026.

Funding of £10,000 was allocated to the garden project following Morgan Sindall’s receipt of two Carbon Awards for exceeding national climate mitigation targets on the Junction Mills development. This funding was directed towards creating lasting environmental and community benefits through the garden.

Site Features and Biodiversity

Located near Bradford Beck, the site had become overgrown and underused. The new garden includes:

  • Seating areas for relaxation and study
  • Biodiversity planting using native species
  • A water feature
  • Habitats for bees, bats and other wildlife
  • Bug hotels
  • A viewing deck overlooking the beck

The planting scheme supports local wildlife and aims to enhance the existing ecosystem, providing a tranquil space for students and staff.

Student Involvement and Learning Experience

The project was led by T Level students Zara Khan, Hasan Safdar and Daniel Ivanovs, working alongside Morgan Sindall Degree Apprentice Callum Porter. The students were involved in all stages, including:

  • Design and layout development
  • Cost planning and budgeting
  • Managing subcontractors
  • Health and safety compliance
  • Client engagement with college department heads

This hands-on experience provided practical skills relevant to their future careers in construction and surveying.

Apprentice Leadership and Collaboration

Callum Porter, the Morgan Sindall apprentice, led the day-to-day delivery of the project. The collaboration between students, college staff and external partners highlighted the importance of teamwork and communication in a live construction environment.

Student Feedback and Community Input

Student input was gathered through a survey developed with the college’s Youth Social Action Apprentice. Feedback emphasised a demand for a calming, nature-based space featuring wildlife habitats, sustainable planting, seating and inclusive areas for socialising and studying. Students also expressed interest in helping maintain the garden.

Project Timeline and Challenges

Initial concepts were developed in early 2026, with site clearance and construction occurring during the Easter period. Despite minor delays caused by weather and sourcing a mural artist, the project was completed to a high standard.

Wellbeing and Educational Benefits

The finished garden offers a peaceful outdoor environment supporting student wellbeing and environmental education. Features such as an ecological information board and QR codes encourage exploration of local wildlife and plant species.

Long-Term Impact

The Wellbeing Garden demonstrates the value of integrating education with industry partnerships. It provides students with practical construction experience while creating a lasting resource for the college community that promotes sustainability and wellbeing.
