New accreditation offers flexible study options for aspiring psychologists

The University of Bradford’s MSc Psychology (Conversion) Distance Learning programme has received accreditation from the British Psychological Society (BPS), recognising its national status and professional credibility. This development means graduates of the programme are now eligible for graduate membership with the BPS, an important step for those pursuing careers in psychology.

Supporting students with diverse commitments

The distance learning format allows students to balance their studies with work and caregiving responsibilities, without the need to relocate or attend full-time classes. For example, Vicky Schreiber, a single mother from Wiltshire, studies the MSc Psychology (Distance Learning) programme in the evenings while working full-time supporting vulnerable adults.

Programme quality and professional relevance

Dr Min Yong, Programme Director, highlighted the significance of the BPS accreditation, stating that it confirms the academic rigour and professional relevance of the course. The programme emphasises inclusive and evidence-based teaching, integrating theory, research, and professional practice. This ensures graduates are prepared for further professional training and can apply psychological principles responsibly in various real-world settings.

Widening access to psychology careers

Dr Peter Branney, Head of Psychology, explained that the online programme is part of the university’s efforts to broaden access to psychological education and careers. By providing a flexible and high-quality route into the profession, the course aims to remove barriers for individuals who might otherwise find it difficult to pursue further study.

The University of Bradford has been recognised nationally for its impact on social mobility for four consecutive years in the English Social Mobility Index. The new accredited programme aligns with this commitment by supporting students from diverse backgrounds to progress into meaningful psychological work.
