Funding renewed to support under-represented students at Bradford

The University of Bradford will continue its Keith Howard Opportunities Programme, a scholarship scheme aimed at supporting white working-class males in higher education. The programme provides financial assistance to help students with living costs during their studies and is set to welcome two new scholars in the 2026/27 academic year following renewed funding from the Keith Howard Foundation.

Details of the Scholarship Programme

The Keith Howard Opportunities Programme was launched in September 2024 to address access to university for under-represented groups, specifically white working-class males whose parents or guardians have not attended higher education. The scholarship offers monthly grants to successful applicants, with amounts structured as follows:

  • £500 per month in the first year
  • £550 per month in the second year
  • £605 per month in the third year

All full-time undergraduate courses at the University of Bradford are eligible for this scholarship.

Background and Purpose

The scholarship is named after Dr Keith Howard OBE, a businessman and University of Bradford alumnus who founded the Keith Howard Foundation. Dr Howard, who passed away in 2021, originally established the foundation in 2008 to continue his philanthropic work. He was known for founding Emerald Publishing in 1967 and maintaining a strong connection with the University’s School of Management.

The programme aligns with the University’s strategic plan for 2025-2035, which emphasises inclusion and widening participation in higher education. The University views diversity as a strength and aims to support students from all backgrounds.

Student Experience

One of the initial recipients, Gareth Atkinson from Keighley, started his studies in Diagnostic Radiography in September 2024. Previously a head chef and hospitality business owner, Mr Atkinson highlighted the financial support the scholarship provides to help him support his family while studying. He also noted that the scholarship has motivated him to succeed academically.

Foundation’s Role

Melissa Tomlinson, Chair of the Keith Howard Foundation, stated that the foundation is pleased to continue its partnership with the University of Bradford. She emphasised Dr Howard’s belief in providing educational opportunities to individuals who might not otherwise have access to higher education.

Application Information

Prospective candidates who meet the eligibility criteria can submit an expression of interest for the Keith Howard Opportunities Programme for the 2026/27 academic year. The University encourages eligible students to apply as part of its ongoing commitment to widening participation.
