New initiative aims to promote sustainable travel in Bradford

Bradford City Football Club Community Foundation, in partnership with Bradford City AFC and supported by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, has launched the Greener Bantams Travel Hub. The project is designed to encourage more accessible, affordable, and sustainable travel options around the city and to the University of Bradford Stadium.

Objectives of the Travel Hub

The Greener Bantams Travel Hub aims to:

  • Encourage walking, cycling, wheeling, and other forms of active travel including scooters and skateboards.
  • Promote healthier and greener travel choices among Bradford residents and football supporters.
  • Provide travel-themed initiatives for supporters attending home games.
  • Organise local walking groups to highlight the benefits of walking and healthy living.
  • Engage with schools and colleges through events and competitions to involve young people in discussions about the future of travel in Bradford.

Statements from Key Figures

Lizzie Saunderson-Trowell, Chief Operating Officer at Bradford City FC Community Foundation, stated that the vision is for a city where walking, cycling, and wheeling are preferred and accessible means of travel for all, including people using wheelchairs. She emphasised the Foundation’s commitment to embedding sustainable travel into daily life through community events, education, and matchday engagement.

Adam Keizer, Sustainability Lead at Bradford City AFC, highlighted the potential of the Travel Hub to make a lasting impact on travel habits in Bradford. He mentioned plans to work with supporters, schools, councils, and community groups to remove barriers to sustainable travel and promote wellbeing.

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, welcomed the initiative, noting its alignment with efforts to improve health, reduce costs, and benefit the environment. She confirmed that funding from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority supports sustainable travel across Bradford, including on match days.

Community Involvement and Access

The Travel Hub offers various ways for the public and supporters to get involved, such as:

  • Using the BetterPoints app to track and encourage sustainable travel.
  • Participating in walking groups and other upcoming events.
  • Engaging with educational activities and competitions organised by local schools and colleges.

Those interested in participating or learning more about the Travel Hub can contact the Foundation via email at office@bcfccommunity.co.uk or complete an expression of interest form available through the Foundation.
