Local Year 6 pupil’s design to feature in upcoming match

A pupil from Laycock Primary School in Bradford has won a competition to design a warm-up shirt for Bradford City AFC players ahead of their match against Leyton Orient on Saturday 7 March. The competition was organised by the Bradford City FC Community Foundation as part of its Community Takeover Day celebrations.

Competition and winning design

The Foundation invited schools across Bradford to submit designs for the warm-up shirt. Hundreds of entries were received, with the winning design created by Elodie, a Year 6 pupil at Laycock Primary School. Her design features a hand-drawn depiction of the club’s mascot, Billy Bantam.

Elodie’s design was selected from the submissions and will be worn by the players during their pre-match warm-up on 7 March. This is the second year the Foundation has run the competition, following last season’s winner, Waleed from Dixons Manningham Primary School.

Presentation and Community Takeover Day

The winning design was revealed to Elodie during a school assembly, where she was presented with the shirt she designed and a signed Bradford City AFC football. The presentation was made by Billy Bantam and Oliver Read, Head of Premier League and Sport Development at the Foundation.

As part of her prize, Elodie has secured 200 tickets for Laycock Primary School to attend the Community Takeover Day fixture. She will also take part as a mascot during the match and join a half-time parade with fellow pupils around the stadium pitch.

Comments from organisers and school

  • Ian Ormondroyd, CEO of the Foundation and former Bradford City player, said the competition showcased impressive talent and congratulated Elodie on capturing the spirit of the club and Foundation in her design.
  • Oliver Read described the competition as a highlight of the Foundation’s work in schools, emphasising its role in engaging children from various communities across Bradford.
  • Stephanie Canning, Head of School at Laycock Primary, said the school community was excited to win the competition and highlighted the significance of the event for pupils, many of whom are avid Bradford City fans. She also noted the school’s involvement in Bradford Girls Power, an initiative promoting girls in sport.
