New educational resource combines darts and maths learning
A new interactive maths resource called Dartboard Maths has been introduced at St Columba’s Catholic Primary School in Bradford. The initiative is a collaboration between the Bradford City Football Club Community Foundation and professional darts player Devon Petersen.
About Dartboard Maths
Dartboard Maths is an educational programme that uses a physical dartboard and related activities to teach core mathematical skills. It aims to engage pupils through play, competition, and movement, supporting subjects such as mathematics, physical education, and social-emotional development. The resource was created by Devon Petersen, who is also a darts pundit for Sky Sports.
Implementation in Bradford
The programme was launched at St Columba’s Catholic Primary School at the start of the academic year. Devon Petersen visited the school to support the initial delivery, alongside coaches from the Bradford City FC Community Foundation and footballer Tommy Leigh. During the visit, they worked with a Year 3 class, focusing on addition and subtraction tasks using the Dartboard Maths resource.
Tommy Leigh, who plays for Bradford City AFC, took part in the introduction and commented on the potential impact of the resource, noting that it could have made maths more enjoyable during his own school days.
Future plans and support
The Dartboard Maths resource is being delivered as part of the Foundation’s Premier League Primary Stars programme, which is funded by the Premier League Charitable Fund. This programme supports sporting and educational activities in primary schools across Bradford.
Oliver Read, who oversees the project for the Foundation, expressed optimism about the resource’s potential to engage both pupils and teachers. St Columba’s is the first school in the UK to incorporate Dartboard Maths into its curriculum, with plans to expand the programme to more schools in Bradford and the surrounding district.
