Westbourne Pupil Wins Banner Design Competition
November 14, 2025Local primary school pupil creates banner promoting smoke and vape-free sports sidelines
A 10-year-old pupil from Westbourne Primary School in Bradford has won a competition to design a banner encouraging smoke and vape-free sidelines at junior sports clubs. The competition was part of a campaign delivered by the Bradford City FC Community Foundation and Bradford Metropolitan District Council.
Winning design promotes healthy sports environments
Adelina Fistac, a pupil at Westbourne Primary School in the Manningham ward, created the winning banner design. Her artwork highlights the benefits of playing sport in smoke and vape-free facilities, aiming to promote healthier environments for young athletes.
Adelina’s design was selected from hundreds of entries submitted by schools across Bradford. The banner will now be displayed at local junior sports clubs that have committed to keeping their sidelines free from smoking and vaping.
Presentation and tournament
- Adelina was presented with her winning banner during a school assembly, attended by the Bradford City mascot, Billy Bantam.
- She also received a personalised Bradford City AFC 2025/26 home shirt to mark her achievement.
- Westbourne Primary School was awarded 200 tickets to the Bantams’ match against Leyton Orient on 7 March, which coincides with the Foundation’s annual Community Takeover Day.
- The banner was displayed at the Smoke and Vape-Free Sidelines Tournament held on 25 October, where local junior clubs participated in competitive football and pledged to maintain smoke and vape-free sidelines.
Statements from organisers and school
Ian Ormondroyd, Chief Executive Officer of the Bradford City FC Community Foundation, said Adelina’s design effectively conveyed an important public health message. He emphasised the Foundation’s commitment to supporting smoke and vape-free environments at junior sports clubs.
Waqqas Akhtar, a class teacher at Westbourne Primary School, expressed pride in Adelina’s creativity and praised the school’s involvement in the campaign. He noted that the school and the Priestley Academy Trust support the message of maintaining smoke and vape-free sports facilities.
