Seanna Doonan Exhibition Opens in Bradford
October 27, 2026New art exhibition explores Northern working-class life
An exhibition showcasing the work of illustrator and mural artist Seanna Doonan will open in Bradford this November. The exhibition runs from 7 November 2024 until 28 February 2027 at South Square, Thornton Road, Bradford.
About the artist and her work
Seanna Doonan is based in Wakefield and is known for her illustrations that depict the daily life of Northern communities, with a particular focus on ex-mining areas. Her work reflects both the challenges and highlights of working-class life, drawing heavily on her own background and family history.
Doonan grew up in a family of folk musicians and was exposed to songs about mining, industrial strikes, and social struggles from an early age. These influences inform her art, which often weaves narratives from characters, stories, and songs into intimate and nostalgic scenes.
Artistic approach
- Each illustration begins as a pen sketch, creating characters and landscapes that form everyday domestic scenes.
- The work addresses broader social issues through depictions of ordinary life.
- Doonan’s style is described as evocative and nostalgic, reflecting her roots and the lives of ordinary people.
Educational background
Seanna Doonan studied illustration at the University of Huddersfield and holds a Masters in Authorial Illustration from the University of Falmouth.
